VANESSA SATTEN
XXL Magazine
VANESSA SATTEN rates her looks outside of the traditional beauty standard
set by the Hip-Hop music establishment and believes that by virtue of
this, it's easier for her to navigate an arena that's dominated by swaggering
young men in their prime, who court the industry's celebrated eye candy
girls. Maybe she's on to something because Satten has become one of Hip-Hop's
most influential women by circumventing the party girl scene and earnestly
working her way through the ranks of XXL magazine, progressing from intern
to editor-in-chief.
Satten pauses
her hectic, deadline-driven schedule to speak with Angela McKenzie about
the pressure and pleasure of generating timely, authentic content for
XXL's hard copy and online magazines and about the yearly XXL Freshman
edition and concert, which help to accelerate the careers of promising
new emcees. Satten is a woman who is quietly and steadfastly making history
in the worlds of publishing and Hip-Hop but she asserts that every success
the magazine achieves results from making readers top priority and from
a work ethic that's rooted in team spirit.
XXL magazine
is an offering of Harris Publications.

JEN MARDEN
JEN MARDEN is a New York City socialite who is using her substantial Rolodex
to bring heavy foot traffic to charitable events, hosted by her company
Jen Marden Charity Event Consulting.
On today's
edition of Initiative Radio, Angela speaks with Jen about her brief and
horrific stint as a reality television starlet and about how growing up
in a very privileged and sometimes pretentious environment inspired her
to devote her professional life to raising awareness and funds for non-profit
organizations such as UNICEF/Haiti, the March of Dimes and the ASPCA.

JOE REVITTE
Dollar Van Demos
JOE REVITTE is a self-described, frustrated movie producer, who was stuck
in development hell preparing to make pictures that would never be. So
to quench his desire to fully materialize a motion picture project, he
looked around his Brooklyn, New York neighborhood for inspiration.
The inspiration
came in the the form of the local, shared transportation service called
the Dollar Van ride, so along with his wife and business partners, Revitte
developed the reality based music video format he named Dollar Van Demos
(DVD.) DVD showcases rising Urban music talent, performing inside Dollar
Vans for an audience of New York City commuters. Revitte video tapes these
performances, packages them professionally and broadcasts them via the
internet. The videos have become very popular and even sparked a collaboration
between DVD and an international restaurant chain, to produce a nation-wide
television commercial campaign, that gives even greater exposure to the
DVD concept and some of the artists who performed for DVD.
Joe Revitte's
DVD is a perfect example of creating art in unexpected places and his
story could encourage others who have chosen to abandon their artistic
aspirations, to reconsider their decision.

ZAN RICE
3-D Animator & Artist (Encore Broadcast)
As Initiative Radio expands its' audience, the IR team is diversifying
the programming to cover topics and guests who might otherwise remain
below the media radar. One such guest is talented, young 3-D artist, animator
and sculptor Zan Rice. In a lively conversation with Angela, Rice recounts
his days as a recalcitrant New York City kid, whose innate artistic talent
was his saving grace. He also gives listeners a crash course in 3-D animation
and the modeling techniques used to bring many of our favorite superheroes
from the pages of our comic books to the movie houses and toy shelves

BOB HOLMAN
From Slam to Hip-Hop, from performance poetry to spoken word, BOB HOLMAN
has been a central figure in the reemergence of poetry in American culture.
The series he produced for PBS, the United States of Poetry, features
over sixty poets including Derek Walcott, Rita Dove, Czeslaw Milosz, Lou
Reed and former President Jimmy Carter, as well as rappers, cowboy poets,
American Sign Language poets, and Slammers. In the 1990's he co-founded
the record label Mouth Almighty/Mercury Records, to bring poetry and spoken
word to a much broader audience and as a consequence of all his hard work
and passion he has appeared on TV: "Nightline," "Good Morning
America," "ABC News Magazine," MTV's "Spoken Word
Unplugged," and "The Charlie Rose Show," among others.
Today he sits down with Angela McKenzie on Initiative Radio for the first
time to talk about the first poem he ever penned, his move to New York
City which was inspired by the Beat Generation and poets like Allan Ginsberg
and Amiri Baraka; his own influence on the New York City poetry scene
for the past three decades and his current projects including his founding
The Bowery Poetry Club in 2002 and his goal to make it a home for emerging
poets and a cultural icon in New York City's lower east side.
